BOLD VOICES Unlocking the Unconscious: This episode relays the little-known story of one of the most important developments in psychology since Freud discovered the unconscious. Join Dr. Thomas Paulus on this wild ride into the unconscious with five interviews that will reignite your hope for emotional healing. Interviews include three experts (Allan Abbass, MD, Patricia Coughlin, PhD, and Brad Strawn, PhD) and two personal accounts of direct access to the unconscious told from the patient perspective. In addition, this episode addresses issues such as 'how to define mental health', what do we mean by the term "the unconscious", and why/how to work with unconscious processes.
EPISODE 5: UNLOCKING THE UNCONSCIOUS
"Baby, I know pain is as natural as the rain. I just thought it didn't rain in California...
But I been cheatin' through this life and all its suffering." Vampire Weekend, "This Life", 2019
Dr. Tom Paulus introduces the show by pointing out the crisis in mental health: despite the fact that the rate of serious mental health diagnoses for many problems are at an all time high (e.g., addiction, anxiety, depression) there is also a lack of consensus among professionals about how to treat mental health problems and what causes them. This episode aims to clear up some the confusion.
Max Belz reads a 1982 article from the New York Times about Davanloo's innovations in psychotherapy. Guest Rachel Paulus shares a story of a first hand experience with an unlocking of her unconscious.
